Rapid growth within Challenge has aided management changes at plant level
The rapid growth within Challenge Meats during recent months has enforced a management restructure. "The over-all objectives of the changes was to group people’s functions and allow them to focus on specific duties,” explained Terry Cooke,
operations director. “We have been able to maintain our ’flat’ management structure, and best utilise personnel and their skills and still keep to an effective management plan,” he said. The biggest management change was in plant management where
Trevor Johnston had been appointed general manager of both the Makarewa and Mataura plants. Trevor was previously General Manager of Makarewa. Doug Lee, formerly general manager of Mataura, had been appointed , general manager livestock
development Doug Is also responsible for the Waimumu coalmine, Challenge farms, the tannery and slink skin operation. Neil Cochrane, formerly financial controller, was appointed general manager operations (control) which encompasses livestock pro-
curement, production planning, and group purchasing. David Ppttinger who was in charge of quality control at Makarewa had been appointed company quality assurance manager, in charge of Challenge’s over-all quality assurance standards and specifications.
