AUSTRALIA Gold stocks firmer

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed higher in aimless trade yesterday as bargain hunters pursued selected quality stocks after Wednesday’s declines. Brokers said little fresh direction from offshore markets overnight, where bullion prices remained steady and Wall Street closed relatively unchanged, gave rise to cautious optimism throughout the session. At the close, the all-ordin-aries index was 6.8 points higher at 2223.2, the allindustrials gained 14 points to. 3327.3, the gold index was up 24.7 points to 3793.8, and the all-resources climbed 1.2 points to 1376.5. Turnover was a moderate 146.28 million shares worth sAust3ol.93M as falls narrowly outnumbered rises. Industrials enjoyed mixed favour but were generally finner. Banks, insurance, transporters and merchants were keenly bid but food, paper and packaging and media stocks continued to fan. Westpac rose 10c to 700 c, the ANZ gained to 544 c and the National Australia Bank 6c to 604 c on solid turnover of 3.52 million shares worth 521.12 M. Of the transport issues, Brambles jumped 60c to 1180 and TNT 16c to 676. Mayne Nickless gained 6c to 626. Elsewhere among resource leaders, Bougainville gained 24 after losing the same on Wednesday to close at 514 c. CRA jumped 20c to 1070 c, Western Mining 16c to 874 and MIM 5c to 340 on heavy

turnover of 4.63 million shares worth $15.94M. The market leader, BHP, down 25c on Wednesday, dropped a further 10c to 1025 c as CSR lost 2c to 468 c.
