Research control

Sir,—l am surprised the Law Conference did not coipe to closer grips with methods of controlling new birth technologies. Surely it is important, to put a brake on certain lines of research before they become fait accompli as surrogacy has done? How would those people who now tolerate surrogacy view human cloning as depicted in “The Boys from Brazil”? Or the breeding of cows as surrogate toothers for half-a-dozen human embryos at once? Or if a scientist, seeing a market for fourhanded factory workers, should cross a human and an ape? The Imagination boggles. Yet in the light of recent startling developments, are any scientists prepared to assert that such innovations are impossible? — Yours, etc. VERNON WILKINSON. October 6,1987.
