Southern Africa

Sir,—The Canterbury Public Library has devoted window space for the “Truth about South-> era Africa” display. It is refreshingly different and most desirable that we see the other side of ; the Marxist propaganda ; story and question why the truth, about southern Africa had been deliberately suppressed in New Zealand for so> long. Plenty of superior, independently produced film on southern Africa is available and, it ,is confirmed, samples are in the possession of B.C.N.Z. But, regrettably, only ■. those favourable to Marxism and communism seem to. be shown. Why? The time is overdue when Parliament should send members of a select committee to < southern Africa to see for filmselves, and to report factually and comprehensively to the fating public who put them in Parliament and have a right to know. Each year approximately 4000 Kiwis visit southern Africa. Each year the Government’s perfidious stand is that much less creditable. —Yours, etc.,

BERT WALKER. September 23, 1987.

[The’directorofTVNZ planning and public affairs, Mr Graeme Wilson, replies: “TVNZ draws on a wide range of reputable and objective sources for its coverage of South Africa. Principal sources are the 8.8. C., the British privately owned television news service 1.T.N., and the major U.S. networks. Material from these sources is presented regularly in current affairs programmes.”]
