Paparua will seek opinion
The Paparua County Council will seek a legal opinion on whether its recent school holiday venture into showbusiness was strictly legal. Cr J. M. E. Calbert said at this week’s council meeting that she was concerned In relation to the Copyright Act about the council’s school holiday
practice of charging admission prices for the public to see video films. "We must be seen to be acting within the law and if it does infringe copyright perhaps we would have to consider screening the holiday time films without charge,” she said. Video films had been screened as part of the
community school holiday programme, but Cr Calvert said she believed the legality of charging admission to see films should be established now. “We would not want to see the council sued by a video distributor.” Her motion that a legal opinion be sought was endorsed by the council.
