Aust. wipes early gains

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed lower across the boards as the market failed to follow on from positive overseas sentiment overnight Brokers said the almost SUS 3 rise in bullion to 8U5457.25 an ounce, gains in crude oil prices, a firm Australian dollar and a higher close in London did little to boost confidence, with early gains reversed in afternoon trading. At the close, the all ordinaries index was 6.4 points down at 2247, the all industrials slipped 9.6 to 3356.2, the gold marker 28 to 3827.3 and the all resources 4 to 1395.8. Turnover was a moderate $144.86 million shares worth sAust3ol.l2M as rises outnumbered falls by five to four. Gold-related stocks mostly fell in spite of the rise in bullion, with only a few stocks managing rises. Heavyweight Rehison slipped 10c to 1540 and Forsayth the same to 480. Noranda Pacific and Whim Creek were both up 10c to 500 and 590 respectively.

MIM, up 7c to 350, featured in turnover lists as 4.41 M shares worth sAustls.42M, changed hands following news its Highland Gold float was to go ahead.
