Polo challenge from England

Four top-ranked polo players from the historic and prestigious Guards Club of Windsor, England, will play against the South Island in a three-match Kiwi Lager polo challenge series at the Canterbury A and P Show in November.

It is appropriate that four representatives from this club should be in Christchurch as this year the show is recognised as a Royal Show. Prince Philip is the president of the Guards Polo Club, and the deputy chairman is Major Ronny Fergusson, the father of the Duchess of York.

The team is led by Somerville LivingstoneLearmouth, a polo instructor at the Guards Club. It also includes James Lucas, Michael Amoore

and Christopher Atkinson. All are four-goal players except Lucas who is a five-goal player and the only amateur.

The chief executive of the Canterbury A and P Association, Mr Noel Woods, said that such a team would be a great drawcard for the show. “I believe this is the first time an English team of this type has come to this part of the world and it is definitely the first time such a team has been involved in the show.”

The South Island team will be Roddy Wood, Alan Calder, Mark Harris and Brian Burrows.

The Canterbury Show will be held at the Addington Show Grounds on November 11, 12, 13.
