Charity golf

About 260 players will contest the annual Murray Halberg charity golf tournament on the Coringa course today. All proceeds go to the Murray Halberg Crippled Children Trust Fund and, based on last year’s effort, the fund should be boosted by another $5OOO this year. There are virtually no expenses to run the tournament — all 18 holes are sponsored, prizes donated, and the course again made available free of charge by the Coringa club. The money this year is earmarked to help purchase a new Maxi van to bring the Crippled Children Society clients to the centre and for recreational purposes.

The combined Eagles societies in New Zealand have contributed more than $500,000 so far to the Murray Halberg Fund. Often mistakenly confused with the golfing “two under club,” the Eagles is a society made up of golf administrators who have made a notable contribution to the sport through their club work. Membership is restricted, and by invitation only.

Apart from the Murray Halberg fund-raising, the Eagles also raise money to foster junior golf and provide manpower for major golfing events, such as the forthcoming Commonwealth women’s tournament
