Kilmarnock four

The Kilmarnock Quartet, a group specialising in traditional Scottish, Irish, and England music, will perform in the Centre Gallery of the Arts Centre at 1.10 p.m. on Friday. The quartet performs regularly at Kaiapoi’s Balmoral Restaurant and for the Canterbury Burns Club, the Scottish Society, and the Arts Centre of Christchurch. The quartet performed for the Southern Regional Arts Council conference at Hanmer Springs, and has given several concerts for the Waimate and North Canterbury District Arts Councils.

The group’s members — John Doig, Richard Butler, Dayle Hadlee and Murray Compton — are from a variety of musical backgrounds. John Doig was trained for some years by Clifton Cook, but deserted music to continue his medical studies. Richard Butler, a Christchurch factory manager, has wide experience as a folk singer and guitarist, having performed in folk clubs and restaurants in London, Dunedin and Christchurch during the last 25 years. Dayle Hadlee was a

member of the Tarrega Four, a folk group of the early 19705. He is an accomplished instrumentalist, performing on guitar, mandolin and harmonica. The piano accordionist, Murray Compton, completes the quartet. He has extensive experience of instrumental and choral music. He has played the piano accordian for more than 20 years, and for four years was a member of the Liedertafel Choir. The quartet’s repertoire is mainly Scottish, although material is also drawn from Irish and English sources.
