Immigrant craftsmen win prizes

PA Wellington Two $2OOO prizes have been awarded by the Academy of Fine Arts to immigrant craftsmen. The Wanganui potter, Mr George Kojis, aged 43, was born in the United States and gained diplomas in fine arts there before moving to New Zealand in 1974. He won with three small stoneware pots titled “David’s Retreat," and "Urban Drift Vessels 1 and 2.”

The Nelson jeweller, Mr Gavin Hitchings, aged 50, was born in Wales, but has lived in New Zealand since 1965, and since last year has been tutoring in jewellery at the Nelson Polytechnic.
