Anti-litter group changes name

Christchurch’s anti-litter organisation has a new name and logo, it was announced yesterday. The Keep Christchurch Beautiful Campaign is the new name of the Civic Pride Campaign and is worked into the new logo which uses daffodils and Christchurch Cathedral. The campaign aimed to promote a cleaner, tidier and more beautiful environment, said the chairman, Mr Roger Ballantyne. The new look campaign was announced as a prelude to Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week, October 3 to 11. During the week the Christchurch group has planned clean-ups and beautification projects for schools and community groups, displays in banks, radio challenges, and a Ministry of Transport blitz on insecure loads. The organisation also has wide-ranging plans for 1988. An information brochure for householders and television advertising on rubbish disposal problems are being prepared.

A resource kit and competition are planned for secondary schools. The colourful mascot, Litterbug, will visit primary schools. The “Leave only your footprints, please” campaign for beaches and coastal areas will continue. Increased numbers of rubbish tins will appear in the city through business sponsorship. Programmes will be set up to reduce rubbish problems on and around building sites and in industrial areas. A small task force will look at the problem of incorrectly covered loads of rubbish going to tips. The Keep Christchurch Beautiful Campaign is mostly voluntary. The executive co-ordinator. Miss Joy Kingsbury, is the only paid staff member. Most of the work is done by five committees of volunteers — business and industry, communications, community organisations, education and municipal. They are overseen by an executive committee.
