Symposium on nuclear war

A nuclear-free New Zealand has attracted an international symposium aimed at making recommendations to reduce the possibility of nuclear war.

The International Conflict Resolution Symposium will be held in Dunedin from October 26 to November 6. The participants will include New Zealand’s Sir George taking, and more than 10 distinguished international figures, according to the symposium’s information officer, Mr Gordon Parry. “They are being brought to a quiet and remote part of the world to spend two weeks of quiet discussion, to analyse the current world situation and to make recommendations for reducing ' the possibility of nuclear war,” said Mr

Parry. Peace conferences were common in the United States, he said. Often academics and others, “usually with an axe to grind,” attended them. They prepared papers, hurried to their venue, delivered their address and flew off, he said.

“The difference with this symposium is that the participants are ‘top drawer,’ that they will be given the chance to take a leisurely and distant view of the world scene, and that they might just come up with a plan which could change the world.” The climate was right for discussions because of New Zealand’s antinuclear stance and the recent book on the effects of nuclear war, Mr Parry said.
