Authorities welcome mill proposal
The news that the Ven-ture-Pacific tender proposal will be investigated further in preference to the N.P.F. submission has been welcomed by West Coast local authorities and the Inangahua community in particular.
In statements made earlier, Venture-Pacific has promised up to 220 jobs in the area once the project is running. Recent redundancies in the coalmining, railway,
and electrical industries have had a big impact on Reefton and many of those workers made redundant have stayed in the town, pinning their hopes on the prospect of future employment with Venture-Pacific. A total of 78 people are listed as unemployed in Reefton which has a population of 1200, less than half that of the recorded 1950 figure of 2500.
The principal officer of the West Coast United Council, Mr David Stapleton, said last evening that the United Council had advised the Forestry Corporation it would support any project that provided the highest level of processing and a basis of sustained yield of the beech resource. “From what we understand, they are the characteristics of the VenturePacific proposal,” he said.
