Rationale picked to win Stakes

Special correspondent Auckland Tristabelle, Tipit, Rationale and Just a Star are foremost in an interesting list of possibilities for the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at the Counties meeting at Pukekohe tomorrow.

All four have the ability to win. So, too, has Spare Money and the promise Regal Affair and Stylish Lass have been showing entitles them to consideration as well. In top form, and she looked pretty close to it again when second at Tauranga last Saturday, Rationale would probably win, specially as under the standard scale she will get weight from Tipit, Tristabelle and Just a Star, even if it is only I.skg. She is on level terms with Regal Affair and Stylish Lass which, while racing well, have yet to match Rationale’s achievements. Through last spring and early summer Rationale turned in a string of fine performances. One brought her the Winstone Guineas and another a close second, behind Tidal Light, in the Avondale Guineas. She finished fourth, as well, in the New Zealand Derby and, in the weight-for-age Lion Red Stakes (1600 metres) managed a creditable third behind the dead-heaters Abit Leica and Consetique, just a head behind the first two which clocked a near-record 1:33.08.

Rationale returned to racing in a 1400 m at Te Rapa on September 12 and finished ninth. Last Saturday, at Tauranga, she beat all except Sir Gerald over 1300 m and looked in great order. A brilliant two-year-old in Australia three seasons ago, Tristabelle has looked classy in seven starts since back in New Zealand after a fair spell. In the latest, a class one 1200 m at Avondale on September 5, she was particularly iippressive. It might well be claimed she did not have much to beat but she had not raced since late May, yet she ran on much too strongly for her opponents. Tipit, soon to be retired for breeding, has never been in better form, following a win at Avondale on August 29 with a • second placing behind Field Dancer at Hastings, each time at weight-for-age. Just a Star came back from a let-up to win a Class 21200 m at New Plymouth on September 2 and she turned in another very good run for third behind Avitt and Tri Bell at Awapuni last Saturday. Regal Affair and Stylish Lass, with seven wins between them, will be having their toughest tests. How they acquit themselves will be most interesting.
