The New Zealand men’s foursomes champions, Phil Aickin and Michael Barltrop, of Auckland, went close to taking the Australian foursomes title as well. They led the Australian amateur field after an opening round of 68, four under par, at the Royal Hobart course in Tasmania, but slipped to 80 in the second round for a share of fifth place. The Canterbury combination of Brent Paterson and John Crawford-Smith finished equal eighth, two strokes behind the Auckland pair.
