Home birth discussed

Home birth should receive more support from the Canterbury Hospital Board, said some of the women at yesterday’s meeting. “Nowhere in the report is mentioned the need for facilities for home birth,” said one woman.

“I feel very strongly that women should have this choice and I feel it

should be promoted and supported by the Hospital Board.”

Dr Fairgray said that thought had been given to home birth but the costs meant that to provide the service something else would have to go. “Home birth services are very costly because people who have them need to know there are

flying squads available if they are needed but the board does not have the money for the flying squads. "I would be delighted to hear suggestions from women who want home births but please, at the same time, could they mention what they want us to decrease in order to pay for the service?”
