Politicians meet after Cup

PA Auckland Two politicians who sat together at Eden Park met for an hour yesterday to discuss matters affecting the relationship between their two countries.

Rugby talk was pushed to the background when the Minister of Sport, Mr Moore, and his French counterpart, Mr Christian Bergelin, met in private after Saturday’s World Cup final in Auckland on Saturday. The meeting, which was sought by the French Government, “was very amicable,” Mr Moore said.

Mr Moore said nuclear testing in the Pacific and French policies on New Caledonia were discussed. Mr Bergelin had told

him he had not detected any antagonism from New Zealanders during his two-day visit despite nuclear testing and the Rainbow. Warriorbombing.

“I pointed out that is not to say that people do not hold strong views,” Mr Moore said.

The implications of international sports contacts with South Africa were discussed and Mr Bergelin outlined his Government’s opposition to such contacts. ■

.> Mr Bergelin said that although there had been speculation, he did not know of any French rugby players who were planning to go to South Africa after the World Cup.
