High-country station sold
By
GLEN PERKINSON
Historic Lochiel station, near Hanmer Springs, has been sold to a Christchurch developer.
The developer, Mr John Butterfield, bought the 5222 ha high-country station for more than $1.5 million, it is believed. Mr Butterfield declined to reveal the purchase price but another source claimed the 101-year-old station was sold unconditionally for $1.5 million plus stock and buildings. The Rutherford family, of Hanmer Springs has owned the station since their arrival in New Zealand more than a century ago. The station runs sheep and deer and contains a historic homestead which is also included in the sale.
Mr Butterfield said he had always wanted to own a high-country station and the purchase of Lochiel realised that dream. He intended to farm the property efficiently, he said.
