Garage rule may be eased
A proposed two-car garaging requirement for new units in Waimairi might be relaxed. The requirement, to allow room on a Residential G section for 36 sq m of garage space per unit, was proposed as Variation No. 11 to the Waimairi District Council’s District Scheme. The variation was objected to by Merritt Homes, Ltd. The company
was supported by the Housing Corporation, Kenneth James, Ltd, and Mr R. Mauger. A planning consultant representing Merritt Homes, Mr Bruce Alexander, told a council planning hearing subcommittee that the company would not be able to fit any more than one of >ts house or flat designs on to the smallest site allowed for two units if
the garage requirement remained.
He said many people did not want a second garage. Those who did should look for units on larger sites. A requirement for an 18 sq m garage would meet the objection. A staff report said the variation could be unreasonable and would penalise people who wanted to live in multiple
units by forcing them to buy larger sections to accommodate the garage requirements. There was not a great demand for two-car garages on existing sites not designed to cater for an extra garage, the report said. Staff recommended the objection be allowed in part.
The • sub-committee reserved decision.
