Deputy mayor to resign
The Deputy Mayor of Lyttelton, Mrs Mary Cretney, will resign from the council “in about three months.” She will move to Nelson where her husband, Mr John Cretney, has been appointed deputy principal of Nelson Polytechnic. Mrs Cretney said that after 10 years in local government she was sad to leave.
“I have spent a lot of time on council activities and I will miss them,” she said.
This is Mrs Cretney’s second term as Deputy Mayor of Lyttelton. She has been chairman of the Borough Council’s finance committee for nine years. She will write two reports before she leaves the council. One will dis-
cuss the financing of longterm capital works and the other will be a “what has happened and what I would like to see happen sort of report,” she said. Mrs Cretney does not intend to become involved in local politics in Nelson.
“You have to live in a community for a while before you can represent its people and their aspirations,” she said.
