Passports delayed
PA Wellington Staff in the British High Commission’s passport office say cheap air fares have brought so many applications for passports that they must work at week-ends to keep abreast.
A passport officer, Mr Mike Rogers, said it was taking eight weeks compared with the usual three to process passport applications at present.
Last year the High Commission issued 18,000 British passports and this year it was expected to be about 18,000 to 20,000. Mr Rogers traced the demand to the cheap fares now offered to Britain and Australia. New Zealanders eligible for British passports were obtaining them to overcome new visa regulations restricting Australians and New Zealanders travelling in Europe.
