Patients sent to Taumarunui

About six Canterbury people have been referred by their doctors to Taumarunui Hospital since it announced it had vacancies tor patients from other areas.

Mr Paul Malpass, medical superintendent of Taumarunui Hospital, said yesterday that smaller

hospitals were able to do more general work because beds were not filled with people requiring specialist surgefy. . “Hospitals in main centres have specialists that the smaller hospitals do not have, and so a lot of their bed space and time are taken with other needs. The smaller hospitals are able to do the bread-and-butter surgery.” Taurriarunui Hospital also served a big area with a small number of people, said Mr Malpass. “Fifty per cent of our patients come from outside our area. We have a building with equipment — why not use it?” Taumarunui Hospital has three general surgeons who are able to perform surgery including gynaecological, stomach, and bowel surgery; surgery for hernias and veins; and sterilisations.
