Close eye on tariff legislation

Wellington reporter

The Government is keeping a close eye on legislation now before the United States Congress which would have the effect of placing a tariff on New Zealand wool.

This was causing concern because of already strong competition from synthetic fibres, according to the general manager of the Wool Exporters’ Council, Mr Bill Carter. The Minister of Overseas Trade, Mr Moore, said the legislation would have the effect of reinstating the duty-free concession on certain strong wools that had expired in mid-1985, and would provide for the refund of duties paid. This proposal, was embodied in a comprehensive trade bill now before the Congress, he said.
