Improvement plan for Sumner streets
Sumner’s streets and open spaces have been examined in an area environmental plan which has taken the Christchurch City Council three years to produce. The plan looks at ways of improving the seaside suburb’s system of streets. Council policy is to emphasise these roads as carriers of local traffic rather than as part of the city’s main trafficcarrying network. Landscaping and use of open spaces are examined and suggestions aim at creating a greater “sense of place” for residents.
Council staff said the plan was like that for Merivale. A lot of time over the three-year period had been spent on the plan because of the special nature of Sumner, said the City Engineer, Mr John Ince.
Council staff aimed to produce plans for three or four areas each year to co-ordinate future development. Most of the plans would not be as detailed as the Sumner one.
The plan, if approved, will be used as a base for public consultation.
