Bank workers to strike
PA Wellington About 18,000 trading bank workers will strike on Monday and Tuesday in protest against their employers’ refusal to offer any more than a 7.5 per cent pay increase. The president of the Bank Officers’ Union, Ms Angela Foulkes, said last evening that bank staff would attend stop-work meetings on Wednesday to “confirm” the next stage of industrial action.
The announcement was made after a meeting at the Union’s national council in Wellington yesterday.
The decision follows up a series of meetings at branches throughout New Zealand during the last week to vote on industrial action after the collapse of award talks. The union seeks a 12 per cent increase plus a $2O a week industry allowance. It has said it expects a high settlement because all four trading banks announced record profits in previous years and would face competition for staff after the deregulation of the banking industry later this year.
