Experiment aims to boost grades

PA Wellington Staff at Taita College in the Hutt Valley are experimenting with a Form 3 scheme they hope will answer some of the worries about falling standards in secondary schools. Groups of three classes will be taught by four teachers in the core subjects of English, mathematics, social studies, and science.

The principal, Mr Bob Wilson, said the scheme would mean staff would lose some of their noncontact time. “But we have to do

this,” he said. “The OECD people tell us we are probably the worst in the world at Form 3 and Form 4 maths.”

The scheme would provide struggling learners with more remedial work, and would enable children to do more extension work. It would be repeated next year with the new Form 3 intake, and the Form 4 children would continue with their programme.

If it proved successful, it could be extended into Form 5 to help English second-language students, Mr Wilson said.
