Convention protocols to be ratified

PA Wellington Two new protocols to the Geneva Conventions, updating and supplementing the laws of war, will be ratified by the New Zealand government this year.

Addressing a Red Cross seminar on humanitarian law recently, the deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr O’Flynn, confirmed New Zealand’s intention to ratify the protocols, 10 years after their formation.

Many Western countries have already ratified the protocols, and Mr O’Flynn said he hoped New Zealand’s move would en-

courage other Governments.

“So that in the not too distant future, the protocols will become a law as universally accepted as the Geneva Conventions.”

The protocols address the effects of changing technology on warfare. “There is mounting concern about chemical and biological weapons and the possibility of nuclear warfare,” Mr O’Flynn said.
