Profiteering denied

PA Rotorua Rotorua police who returned from eastern Bay of Plenty yesterday have angrily denied reports that shopkeepers were profiteering after the earthquake. Television news on Tuesday evening reported that some shopkeepers had greatly inflated their prices.

Sergeant Steve Farrelly said that far from profiteering, many shopkeepers were giving their goods away free. “In Edgecumbe some of them filled up trundlers and brought all sorts of food down to the Cosmopolitan Club and gave it away for nothing.” A Kawerau hamburger bar owner spent Tuesday making free hamburgers and giving away drinks, Sergeant Farrelly said.
