Dairy Board expands

PA Wellington The Dairy Board has moved to strengthen its trading links with the Soviet Union by buying the Soviet interests of Amalgamated Dairies. Amalgamated is one of New Zealand’s main traders with the Soviet Union. It is the sole importer of Lada and Niva vehicles and has the Soviet Union’s potash agency for New Zealand, the board said. A big attraction for the Dairy Board is that Amal-

gamated has an accredited office in the Soviet Union. Such accreditation is difficult to obtain and no other New Zealand company has such accreditation. During the last five years, Amalgamated’s im-port-export trade with the Soviet Union has aver-

aged about $2O million, exports being mainly wool, mutton and lamb. The board said it was already New Zealand’s largest exporter to the Soviet Union but believed

there was still room for the expansion of reciprocal trade and was determined to take an increasingly active role in that development. The board will set up a subsidiary company to handle its expanded business. Mr Bruce Gaffikin will become the general manager.

Mr Gaffikin formerly handled Elders’ New Zealand and Australian exports to the Soviet Union and had worked in Moscow for several years, the board said.
