Plea to sign protocols
By
PETER O’HARA
NZPA London Britain will be urged to sign the South Pacific Nuclear-Free Zone Treaty protocols by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, today. Mr Bolger said he would raise the matter when he met the Foreign Secretary, Sir Geoffrey Howe, and the junior
Foreign Minister, Baroness Janet Young. Mr Bolger and the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said they expected the British to side with the American Administration, which had refused to sign. Britain has yet to make its position public. The treaty was “an attempt to make a contribution” to world peace. If
the major Powers signed the protocols it would be beneficial, Mr Bolger said. He made the same plea in the United States last year. The protocols invite the nuclear Powers to agree not to use, threaten to use, station or test nuclear weapons in the zone. The treaty does not prohibit the passage of ships carrying nuclear weapons.
