The grounds of Mona Vale will take on a Dickensian air on Sunday when the Zonta Club of Christchurch holds a garden party to raise money for several Christchurch charities. Members of the club were busy yesterday making nineteenth century servants’ costumes for the garden party. Shown, from left, are Mrs Noel Macdonald, Mrs Jacquie Hanafin, and the club’s president,
Miss Marion Ruthven, taking a break from their labours. Club members and others attending the party will be encouraged to wear costumes depicting characters in the works of Charles Dickens or the dress of the midninteenth century. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. A range of entertainment will include rowing on the river, horse and cart rides, apple bobbing,
a magician, a juggler, and a fire-eater, as well as performances by the Sweet Adeline Singers and a male vocal quartet.
Children will be admitted free to the garden party but the proceeds from the sale of tickets to adults will be divided between Hohepa Homes (Canterbury), the Cot Death Society, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Canterbury Aged People’s Welfare Council.
