Blaze destroys sports books

PA Auckland A fire that destroyed thousands of dollars of sports books in a Parnell basement during Tuesday night was deliberately set, the police say.

Detectives linked the fire, which extensively damaged Rugby Press, Ltd’s basement storeroom, to four other fires in the same street in the last month.

Last week, fire-fighters were called to the street twice on Monday night and once on Tuesday. Rubbish bags and paper had been set alight in a company’s loading bay, an office foyer and beside a power pole. “This one is a little more sophisticated than that,” one detective said. No accelerant had been used to start Tuesday night’s blaze. Papers had apparently been set alight in the storeroom which had been broken into, said the police.

The fires have all started about 11.30 p.m.
