‘Stern measures needed’

Stern measures are needed to combat violent offending, according to the Opposition spokesman on justice, Mr Paul East.

New Zealanders would be extremely concerned to hear that there were 139 homicides last year, up 24 per cent on the 1985 figure, he said.

Sexual attacks had risen 11 per cent on the 1985 figure, and serious assaults had increased more than 46 per cent.

“These statistics will confirm what ordinary

New Zealanders have known for many months,” said Mr East.

“Violent offending is on the increase and strong measures must be taken to counteract it.” Mr East called for more police on the streets, sterner penalties for violence, and a prison system that was a deterrent. Laws which dealt with gangs and made parents responsible for the actions of their children were also needed.

The Opposition spokesman on drug misuse, Mr Graeme Lee, has called for an independent inquiry into “the dramatic increase in drug abuse.”
