Shirley dominate volleyball triples
Teams from Shirley Volleyball Club dominated the volleyball triples tournament held at Pioneer Stadium last week-end, winning the competitive grade, and also having two other teams placed in the top four positions. In the competitive grade, Shirley, which provided three of the four semi-finalists, showed that it will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming league season. The two losing seml-final-ists, both teams from Shirley, were perhaps a little unlucky, as they were the only two teams to reach the semifinals undefeated.
The final, played between a Shirley team and an invitation side, was given somewhat of an International flavour by the presence of a French volleyball player, Hubert Chanson, in the invitation team, with Grant Morrow, and Keri MacLeod.
However, the Shirley team of Kate Kerdemelidis, Colin Redpath and Grant Waller proved to be too strong, and put on a very controlled display to win the finai 20-13. Kerdemelidis was quite outstanding in the back court, and Redpath and Waller combined well in the front court to produce a winning result. Results.—
Semi-finals: Shirley 1 (K. Kerdemelidis, C. Redpath, G. Waller) beat Shirley 2 (H. Schumann, J. Rhind, C. Waller) 20-16, Invitation (H. Chanson, K. MacLeod, G. Morrow) beat Shirley 3 (H. McCutcheon, K. Vesty, S. Vesty) 21-19. Final; Shirley 1 beat Invitation 20-13.
