Treasury takes advice
PA Wellington The Treasury has contracted South Pacific Merchant Finance, Ltd, to provide advice on the management of the Crown’s financial assets and liabilities, the Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, has said. The contract represents a further step in a series of moves over the last two
years to enhance the efficient management of resources controlled by the Government. “Since the New Zealand dollar was floated in 1985, overseas borrowing by the Government has been based on refinancing existing foreign currency liabilities on more favourable terms,” Mr Douglas said.
“The Treasury has been managing existing liabilities to reduce risk and minimise long-term costs. “However, the rapid evolution of financial markets offers the potential to manage the Government’s net liabilities in the same way that corporate treasurers do,” he said.
