Chch doctor appointed to chair

A Christchurch psychiatrist and senior lecturer, Dr Peter Joyce, has been appointed to the chair of psychological medicine at the Christchurch School of Medicine.

Dr Joyce, aged 34, was born and educated in Christchurch. He graduated in medicine from the Otago Medical School in 1978, was apipointed to the Christchurch school in 1984, and made a member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 1985. He also has an honours degree in biochemistry from the University of Canterbury. Dr Joyce works part-time as a consultant psychiatrist at Sunnyside Hospital. His research into depression and trends in the diagnosis of mania and schizophrenia in New Zealand and on psychotropic drug use has attracted considerable interest worldwide.

At present he is involved in the Christchurch psychiatric,. epidemiology study. Dr Joyce hopes to establish Christchurch as a centre specialising in mood disorders.
