Blyme the one to beat at Rangiora

By W. R. CARSTON

Win, lose or draw, .Blyme looks sure to be the one the others will have to reckon with in the ► Lion Brown North Canter.bury Cup, first leg of the ZT.A.B. double at Rangiora today.

The Riccarton-trained seven-year-old goes into ~one of the North Canterbury Racing Club’s feature events with a record which has been stamped by consistency.

Last time out "Tex” Kenneally’s Palatable entire ran the highly regarded Sea Swift close over 2100 metres at Washdyke. Earlier in the season he was successful at Ashburton and Blenheim so his form is pretty hard to fault from any angle. If the forecast proves correct and the rain comes Blyme’s prospects of a victory will diminish slightly and the chances of a victory for Graikos will brighten. Although this Balcairntrained six-year-old was successful on firm going at Wingatui two starts back, he has previously always been regarded as

at his best when the sting is out of the ground.

Noble Note could well be regarded as the problem horse in today’s field. He has as good a record as any, and better than most, and although he has previously performed well over a middle-distance in ,top company his record to date suggests that his best distance is probably 1600 metres, or less.

Among the others further down in the handicap the best chances might be Vail of Tralee and Burdite. The former looks to be close to approaching her best again and Burdite’s recent form has been hard to fault. Favouritism for the second leg, the Ashley Meats Handicap, was probably settled yesterday when Garth Ivil decided not to run Panther and Zaheer against each other. Either of these two talented sprinters could have been the popular choice but now that their Levin trainer has decided to let Panther drop out of the field that distinguished position will almost certainly go to Zaheer.

Zaheer will be having his first start here since competing unsuccessfully at Levin in July. Nevertheless, it will surprise if he fails to make a bold showing at 1200 metres fresh-up.

South Island trainers will saddle their share of talented sprinters to cope with the Ivil challenge but with the exception of Rufus Dawes, at No. 3, most of them are not favourably drawn. Pokare and the former northerner, Reutemann, along with Epatante, have fared reasonably well from mid-field positions but Dainty Dish, which must have been rated among the top fancies, will probably have to work hard to carry her backers through from the outside of 13 at the start. Unless some of the others have undisclosed talents, Arctic Wolf, the “boom” colt from the Ivil stable whose four starts have yielded three wins and a second, is expected to carry off the thick end of the prize in today’s feature race for three-year-olds, the $12,000 Canterbury Mile.

Emergency: Smooth Shiela. Scratched: Decision Time, Steiger, The Last Supper. Race 7 D, TF 2.55 LION BROWN NORTH CANTERBURY CUP $7000; 2080 m. 1 1142 Blyme 1 J. Dowling 57.0 Close second to Sea Swift at Washdyke last time out. Sure to take beating despite weight if footing is reasonable. 2 6216 Graikos 7 D. Frye 55.0 Free-goer with sound record and certain to be around about at the finish, especially if the sting is out of the going. 3 507 Noble Note 11 R. McCann 55.0 Top performer taking time to recapture his peak form again this season but must be getting close. 4 5 His Latest 13 R. Bruce 53.5 Fair effort fresh-up to finish fifth of eight at Riccarton this month. Won this race last year and could be worth trying for better odds. 5 47 White Lip 12 T. Matthews 52.5 Two runs in fresh campaign at Riccarton earlier in the month were both over shorter journeys. Capable of further improvement. 6 9653 Vail of Tralee 8 B. Pelting 52.0 Best effort on latest campaign in the south was third behind Blovinski and Samasaan at Riccarton earlier in the month. Will command respect on strength of that run. 7 0 Te Kaahu 3 G. Killick 51.5 Weak finish when resuming against metric-milers at Riccarton earlier this month. Has won on firm footing before but seems to prefer wet conditions best. 8 2134 Burdite 6 G. Davison 51.0 Has been racing consistently all along the line and although recent graduate to this class must be respected at the weights. 9 7979 Club Royals 9 G. Taylor 51.0 Would have to improve on recent efforts to be threat to the best of the others in this field. 10 5 Giveaway 10 J. Woledgesl.o Faded from front-end for fair fifth against metric-milers when resuming at Riccarton last Saturday week. Comes up with odd good run but wins have been well spaced. 11 4361 Marche Noir 4 J. Cameron 51.0 Regained peak form against class three middle-distance performers in heavy ground at Riccarton last Saturday week. This looks tougher but will still command respect. 12 Miracle Mouse 2 D. Morel 51.0 Tough assignment here in first appearance for 18 months. 14 007 Our Rob 5 C. Crowe 51.0 Sure to be at improving stage but has not shown anything yet this time around to suggest a win is close at hand. Scratched: Moana Isle. Race 8 T 3.35 KINGS MOWERS SERVICES MAIDEN $3100; 2080 m. 1 000 Abbey Queen 11 J. Cameron 55.0 2 4433 Charlie Trelay 14 D. Frve 55.0

Scratched: Cheval Vapeur, Norfolk Eve, Open Bay, Prince Town, Regal Bay. Race 9 D, T 4.10 ASHLEY MEATS HANDICAP < $6000; 1200 m. 2 Dig In 11 J. Dowling 55.0 Better known for his deeds over more gound than this but could sprint boldly fresh-up. 3 25 Pokare 8 T. Matthews 54.0 Capable of matching the best on his day and could go close in this, his third run in a fresh campaign. 4 1 Reutemann 10 J. Cameron 54.0 All-the-way winner over 1410 m at Blenheim last time out in his first race for seven months. Top-ciass sprinter early but not the soundest of propositions these days. 5 34 Dainty Dish 16 D. Frye 53.5 Sound efforts for minor placings in two runs against the open sprinters at Riccarton this month. Biggest disadvantage here could be her outside barrier draw. 6 9670 La Pomme 15....... . R. Bruce 53.5 Won this race last year but would have to improve on anything he has shown this time up from outside barrier position to repeat the performance. 7 Sound Note 5 R. McCann 53.0 Has been off the scene since April but is very good at her best and a bold showing fresh-up would come as no surprise. 8 130 Epatante 9 C. Crowe 52.5 Lack-lustre run on easy track at Riccarton earlier this month could be excused. Speedy type which will be in the thick of it most of the way if she strikes the right footing. 9 Zaheer 4 G. Davison 52.0 Top-class sprinter having his first outing since July. Will only need to come up with one of his peak runs to prove more than a match for the best of the others here. 10 1068 Chapel Hill 14 G. Taylor 51.5 Won fresh-up at Ashburton early last month but showings in three starts meantime have not been up to the same standard. 11 1319 Rufus Dawes 3 S. Reid 51.5 Weak showing among sprinters at Riccarton last time out but impressive last-to-first winner against sprinters at Orari at his previous start. 14 5 Kubiak 2 D. Morel 50.0 Faded to fifth after pace-making in lower grade sprint at Riccarton last Saturday week. This looks tougher. 15 0 Osmunda Hill 7 J. Fallen 50.0 Shaped well as a three-year-old but weak showing when resuming against class three sprinters at Riccarton earlier this month. 16 5708 Tuahiwi Daisy 6 J. Jamieson 50.0 Lone win to date has been in maiden class and looks out of depth in this field. Scratched: Panther, Satiny’s Pride, Morrie Man.
