Pole takes marathon

PA Hamilton The Polish runner, Wojciech Ratkowski, cleared out to win the Hamilton International Marathon by 10 minutes from Robert Schuddeboom, of Greymouth, on Saturday. Ratkowski’s main rivals, Zoltan Lantos (Hungary) and Mark Anderson (Colorado), withdrew during the race.

Lantos pulled out ‘ because he was finding the heat and humidity too

severe while Anderson, who at one stage was misdirected and lost a couple of minutes, called it a day because of leg cramps.

Ratkowski, in any event, was always travelling like a winner and noone was able to get anywhere near .him as he completed the course in 2hr 18min 12s.

The marathon director, Mr Andy Galloway, agreed . the conditions Were unusually warm and

humid for the race, which in other years has been plagued by showers and strong winds.

The first veteran was Ray Brown (Auckland), who was fifth over all while the first woman was Carol Raven (Wellsford).

Results.—W. Ratkowski (Poland) 2:18.12; R. Schuuddeboom (Greymouth) 2:28.23; P. Handcock (Nelson) 2:29.17; M. Radcliffe (Christchurch) 2:29.31; R. Brown (Auckland) 2:34.52; A. Laughlin (Auckland) 2:37.52.
