Call for 30 years jail
NZPA-Reuter Managua The Nicaraguan Justice Minister, Rodrigo Reyes, said yesterday that he had asked for the maximum penalty of 30 years in .prison for an American accused of delivering arms to United Statesbacked rebels battling the Left-wing Sandinist Government. Eugene Hasenfus, aged 45, is expected to appear today before a revolution-
ary tribunal to hear the charges against him. “This man (Hasenfus) has been paid to deliver arms for killing Nicaraguans,” Mr Reyes said. “I am asking for the maximum penalty, which is 30 years.” Charges against Hasenfus, who was captured after parachuting from a plane shot down over southern Nicaragua, include terrorism, violating the public order and
security law, and “illicit association to commit an offence.” The revolutionary tribunal in which Hasenfus is being tried is a special type of court set up in 1983 to judge crimes related to the country’s five-year-old war against the rebels, who are known as “contras.” Human rights groups have criticised the courts, saying they neglect normal judicial standards.
