Privileges Committee in closed session
PA Wellington Parliament’s Privileges Committee, hearing a charge against Mr John Banks (Nat., Whangarei), went into closed session yesterday after receiving a letter from his counsel, Mr Jim McLay. Mr Banks faces charges of a breach of Parliament’s privilege arising from comments made during debate on the Homosexual Law Reform Bill seven months ago. Mr Banks accused the Chairman of Committees, Mr John Terris, of being in collusion with the bill’s sponsor. He was subsequently suspended from the debating chamber for 24 hours. Before news re-
presentatives were required to leave the room the chairman of the Privileges Committee, the Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer, said it was unlikely they would be allowed to return.
