Surgeon’s obituary

A Christchurch ortho- ’ paedic surgeon, Mr William Allan Liddell, was involved in several activities not mentioned in the obituary in “The Press” yesterday. Mr Liddell, who died on Saturday, aged 65, had a longstanding interest in paraplegics, having been the consultant orthopaedic surgeon to the Burwood Spinal Unit since the late 19505. He was the New Zealand team doctor at the World Paraplegic Games in 1968 and 1970. He also attended the 1970 British Commonwealth Paraplegic Games, where the Governor of Alabama, Mr George Wallace, made him an honorary lieuten-ant-colonel aide-de-camp to the Alabama State Militia for his services to the paraplegic community. Mr Liddell was the Canterbury representative on the New Zealand Paraplegic and Physically Disabled Federation from 1968 to 1971, and vicepresident from 1975 to 1982. During his term as president of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association, Mr Liddell was the New Zealand representative at the six-yearly Orthopaedic Association for the English Speaking World convention in London in 1976. Mr Liddell was mistakenly referred to as Dr Liddell in the obituary. j
