Added incentive for All Whites
PA Auckland The New Zealand soccer team has been given a financial incentive to boost its performances in the two internationals against Australia. A $5OOO win bonus has been put up by Sound Plus, a chain of video and stereo stores. The first game in the Winfield series will be played at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday with the return match in Sydney on November 2.
It is the first of what will become an annual home-and-away series between the two transTasman rivals. If there is no clear-cut winner over the two games the Winfield Cup will be decided on a goals for and against
basis. If that does not separate the two teams the team scoring the most goals will be the winner. If they still remain tied a penalty shoot-out will be held. The All Whites began their training in Auckland ON Monday with an Bkm run through Cornwall Park. THe coach, Kevin Fallon, was wanting to check up on how his 16man squad had followed his fitness programme in the last few weeks and\ he was not entirely ■ happy. Mr Fallon stated on Saturday that he* had few worries over his Gisborne players as they had followed the programme rigidly. And he wasn’t far wrong. The defenders, Rich-
ard Mulligan and Kenny Cresswell, were among the leaders on the run with others in the front bunch being Dave Witteveen (Mt Wellington), Ricki Herbert (Mt Wellington), Billy McClure (Papatoetoe) and Grant Turner (Miramar). The All Whites coach ordered a similar run at 7 a.m. yesterday and another is planned for this morning. Mr Fallon and assistant coach, Eddie Edge, will take the team through match work at Mt Smart throughout the week with two sessions a day planned. The squad will remain in camp until after the second game. The Australian team does not arrive in Auckland until tomorrow night
