Pacific Cup league
PA Auckland Five Cook Island rugby league representatives flew to Rarotonga on Monday to compete in the first Pacific Cup rugby league tournament since 1977. It is the first time that seven countries — Tonga, Tokelau, Samoa, Niue, Australian Aborigines, New Zealand Maoris and Cook Islanders — have competed for the Steinlager cup.
The organiser, Peter Donnelly, says it has taken two years of “hard struggle” to plan the competition and get teams together. In some cases, Western Samoa, Niue and Tokelau rugby league associations had to be formed, so they could enter. One Waikato and two Auckland referees will attend the tournament which runs from October 27 to November 7.
