Swart clinches title

NZPA-AAP Canberra Jack Swart, deemed too old to ride for New Zealand, yesterday clinched the King of the Mountains title in the Coffs Harbour to Canberra cycling classic. Swart, aged 31, riding for the Victoria-Repco team, won the title after two hill climbs yesterday only to lose it to Matsuyoshi Takahashi

(Japan) when the judges reversed the placings on one of the climbs when Takahashi was blocked by another rider. However, an appeal by Swart was upheld and the title was returned. An Australian, Andrew Logan, won the classic by nine seconds in a dramatic finish from a Swedish rider, Lars Wahlqvist, who had worn the yellow

leaders jersey since last Tuesday. Logan had been Ils behind Wahlqvist for most of the tour but reduced the deficit to one second on the leg from Goulburn to Queanbeyan yesterday morning. The Australian-Holden team rider continued the charge in the afternoon when he finished third
