Cricket Ditch ‘oiled’

NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg Anti-apartheid supporters poured oil on the Newlands cricket pitch in Cape Town yesterday to protest against the forthcoming rebel tour by Australian cricketers. An anonymous telephone caller, claiming responsibility, told a Cape Town newspaper the pitch

was vandalised by a “cadre of very angry sportspersons.” He said: “We are sick and tired of these rebel tours taking place very much against the wishes of the oppressed people of South Africa.” Fritz Bing, president of the Western Province Cricket Union, said damage was minimal and only

a portion of the pitch had been affected. The tourists, led by a former Australian captain, Kim Hughes, are due to arrive in South Africa next month for their second boycott-breaking tour. The republic is isolated from most international sport because of its apartheid race segregation policies.
