Store-sheep auction draws big gathering

The store-sheep auction at the Addington market yesterday attracted a big number of intending buyers and spectators eager to check out prospects for buying stock for fattening. A small selection of new season’s lambs sold between $16.40 and $19.60, while shorn ewes with small to medium lambs at foot made $9 to $l2 (all counted). Woolly ewes and lambs reached $l6. High soil-moisture levels promise a flush of feed in coming weeks which will probably lead to the strong demand for store sheep continuing. Prime hoggets The hogget market quickly recovered from a slow start and by the end of the sale prices had settled at a level about $1 ahead of last week’s. Top condition hoggets reached $3O a head and most good sheep sold between $2l and $26, with light stock at $l5 to $lB. The number of spring lambs offered each week continues to increase only slowly. Yesterday’s yarding of 192 was easy to sell to a buying gallery of butchers, processors and fatteners. Ram lambs suitable for growing on fetched a worth-while premium. The hogget yarding was 1160 compared with 845 last week. Values were:— Heavy hoggets, to $2B, with some sales to $3O. Medium hoggets, $2l to $23. Light hoggets, $l5 to $l9.

Prime sheep Prime old ewes recorded another excellent sale and over-all prices rose at least $1 a head. Heavy-shorn ewes regularly made $l3 to $l5 and heavily-woolled sheep reached $24. Ewes carrying a reasonable quantity of slipe wool made $l5 to $l6 and only light condition ewes fetched $ll to $l2. Two-tooths sold strongly also, at $2O to $23 for good sheep, while good quality four-tooths made $l3 to $l7. The total yarding was 1725 compared with 2192 last week. Values were:— Best old ewes, to $lB, with heavily-woolled ewes to $23.80. Medium old ewes, $l3 to $l6. Light old ewes, $ll to $l3. Best two-tooths, to $22. Medium two-tooths, $l7 to $l9. Prime cattle The beef cattle yarding exceeded last week’s total by more than 100 head, but the demand from butchers and processors remained confident. Prices were fully firm with last week’s rates and in some cases were slightly dearer, particularly for good quality lightweight heifers and heavy steers. A Shorthorn cross steer from R. G. and V. E. Topp, Rotherham, led prices with $875. A Hereford-Friesian cross heifer from J. P. Stalker, Greenpark, made $584, and two cows made $602 — a Simmental-Here-ford cross from Estate J. S. Scott, Heathcote, and a Hereford from Glenmark Partnership, Waipara. The yarding was 374 (266 last week). Prime steers and heifers to 220 kg sold between 210 c and 220 c a kilogram; from 220 kg to 270 kg, 210 c and 220 c; and over 270 kg, to 220 c. Values were:— Prime heavy steers, to $875.

Bobby calves The bobby calf section contained a bigger proportion than usual of lower-quality calves and this contributed to a general easing in the market However, prices of good quality calves remained firm. Most Friesian bull calves made $4O to $lO2, Friesian heifers $22 to $6O, beef cross bulls $B4 to $126, and beef cross heifers $4O to $92. Dairy cow A single dairy cow — a springing fourth-calving Friesian — sold at $4OO. Store sheep Woolly ewes with lambs at foot reached $l6 ■ (all counted) in another strong sale for all types of store sheep. Shorn ewes and lambs ranged from $8.60 to $12.40, depending on lamb size, while ewes carrying slightly more wool fetched $ll to $l4. Only a handful of pens of good quality ewes and wellgrown lambs was offered. A small selections of store spring lambs sold at $16.40 to $19.60, and old ewes again attracted strong competition with woolly ewes in forward condition making $l7. Most other ewes made $8 to $l2. A big gallery of farmers followed the whole store sheep sale. Sales included:— P. M. Burrows (Halswell), 15 ewes (woolly) and 22 lambs at $l6 (all counted); D.

A. and S. Gebbie JTeddington), 23 ewes and 28 lambs at $12.40. Prime pigs Prices were slightly easier in another big yarding of prime pigs, but the market over-all remained very good. Good quality bacon sold to $2OO and the best porkers made $l5O. A big yarding of choppers had another strong sale, with good-cutting pigs making between $l6O and $lBO and odd sales to $260. Values were:— Light pork, $llO to $125. Medium, to heavy pork, $l3O to $l5O. Light to medium bacon, $155 to $lBO. Heavy bacon, to $204. Light choppers, $l2O to $l5O. Heavy choppers, $l7O to $2OO. Store pigs Very few large store pigs were offered in the store section where prices were slightly easier than at last week’s exceptionally strong sale. A large number of better quality weaners and slips sold between $6O and $7O, but smaller weaners were harder to sell and prices were $5 a head back on last week’s. Buying power was again widespread. Values were:— Small weaners, $35 to $43. Good weaners, $45 to $55. Slips and small stores, $6O to $75. Large stores, to $9O.
