Bonetti back
By
ROBIN CHARTERIS
in London A New Zealand-born international cellist, Marc Bonetti, will perform in Christchurch next month during a six week tour of his home country with Australian pianist Rachel Valier. They will give 20 recitals and three concerto performances in provincial and main centres throughout the North Island and in Christchurch, Akaroa and Nelson. Bonetti, aged 28, is one of six children of a musical family. His father, Antoni Bonetti, was a member of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra before he moved to Sydney 20 years ago to give his children a better musical education. His five brothers and sisters all play string instruments, his mother teaches piano and singing and plays the viola and his father was principal
violinist with the Sydney Symphony. Marc Bonetti, who recently took part in the 1986 Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow, has played in Britain for the last six years for such orchestras as the 8.8. C. Symphony, 8.8. C. Concert and Welsh National Opera and as principal cellist for the Royal Ballet at Sadlers Wells. In Australia he has worked with the Sydney Elizabethan and Sydney Symphony Orchestras. Last year he was guest principal with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Since 1980, when he won an Australian Council award, he has studied in Britain, first with the famous cellist Jacqueline Du Pre and latterly with William Pleeth. The Christchurch performance will be in the Great Hall at the Arts Centre on November 1. The Akaroa recital is the following day.
