Stevedores stop work

The Port of Lyttelton was shut from 1 p.m. to 2.15 p.m. yesterday as foremen stevedores stopped work to discuss possible redundancies. Two ships — the Greenfield, which is loading meat, and the container ship George H. Scales — lay idle during the meeting.

The secretary of the

Lyttelton branch of the Foremen Stevedores’ Union, Mr Kevin McCreanor, said later that the meeting was held to bring the 56 members up to date about impending redundancy talks. The national president of the union, Mr Bill Wilson, of Auckland, and other senior members of the national executive at-

tended the meeting. Redundancy talks would soon be held with the New Zealand Association of Waterfront Employers and the Union Steam Ship Company, said Mr McCreanor. He said that he did not know how many foremen stevedores would be affected.
