Australia retains Dunhill Cup
NZPA-Reuter St Andrew’s Australia triumphed against Japan in gale-force winds on the Old Course at St Andrew’s to retain the million-dollar Dunhill Cup nations golf championship with a 3-0 victory in the final. Each member of the winning team collected $lOO,OOO which made the Australian captain, Greg Norman, the British Open champion, the first golfer ever to win more than $1 million in prize money in a single year. With Rodger Davis "playing his eyes out” and David Graham and Norman battling it out against the world’s best, Australia dropped only one match in the 12 played. Results (seeded positions in brackets): Final: Australia (2) beat Japan (4), 3-0: Rodger Davis 76, Tateo Ozaki 81, David Graham 81, Naomichi Ozaki 82; Greg Norman 73, Tsuneyuki Nakajima 76. Third-place match: Scotland (3) beat United States (1), 2-1: Gordon Brand jun. 75, Mark O’Meara 78; Sam Torrance 78, Ray Floyd 73; Sandy Lyle 73, Lanny Wadkins 78.
