Smooth Jack favoured again tonight

Special correspondent Wellington

Smooth Jack should have little trouble completing a double when he contests the Andas Mobile pace at the Wellington Harness Racing Club’s meeting at Hutt Park this evening. The Smooth Fella four-year-old proved a class above his rivals at the Masterton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday when he cruised home and won by a length, a margin that flattered the second-placed horse My Locality. Smooth Jack was doing his work easily and trainer-driver Michael Stormont had an armchair drive. The horse has now won four of his nine starts and a good draw this evening should see him prominently placed throughout. The only question mark about Smooth Jack is his racing manners. He has proved a little erratic pre-

viously though he certainly showed no signs of this on Saturday. My Locality looks the most likely to test him again. He finished second in each of his three starts on the track this season and looks destined for a similar placing again. Certainly, Smooth Jack and My Locality had the finish to themselves on Saturday with a gap of 15 lengths back to the third-placed horse, Vicki McQuade.

Festive Heir should take some heading off in the second leg of the T.A.B. double the Hutt Park Graduation Series Final.

The Shicker three-year-old looked smart when finishing second in two starts at Hutt Park earlier in the season and he confirmed those placings with a convincing win in his heat on Saturday.

He cut out the 2400 metres in a smart time of 3:9.4 after leading throughout and driver Maurice McKendry will

probably try for an all-the-way win again.

His task has been made easier with the other heat winner, Reilly, being ineligible and his toughest opposition could come from Full Alert and Dark Albatross. Full Alert turned in a fine effort to run a close fifth on Saturday after breaking at the start and then sitting parked out for much of the race. He has a second row draw to overcome but looks to have the ability to play a part in the finish.

Dark Albatross ran fourth in his heat after being locked up in the trail throughout. He appeared to be full of running at the finish and has again been favoured by the No. 1 draw.

Wibahe El and Rosewood Smooth both went kindly on Saturday at the Masterton meeting while Graff Spee could be an improver. He lost his chance after breaking on Saturday.
